The Week That Was #232... 5 peeks behind the week at Working Word
Celebrating the success of a star student from Cardiff. Reporting a steady housing market in Wales despite the pandemic. Encouraging health and exercise amongst the elderly. Keeping pets pampered at a new dog spa. Showcasing the best 'staycations' Wales and Ireland has to offer.
Here’s five peeks behind our week at Working Word…
1) Cardiff to Chicago for star student thanks to Seren support
This week we told the story of eighteen-year-old Donte Day, from Pentwyn, who will be heading to the University of Chicago in September to study economics after getting an amazing 4A*s in his A-levels.
Donte has been able to secure the opportunity thanks to the support of The Sutton Trust and our client, the Seren Network - a scheme funded by Welsh Government which is designed to support Wales’ brightest students to achieve their academic potential and go to leading universities in Wales, the UK, and overseas.
2) Sharing news of a steady housing market in Wales
It’s been a disconcerting few months for the housing market across the UK, with its temporary freeze and uncertainty around how the Coronavirus pandemic will affect house prices in the long term. But the latest House Price Index report for Wales from our client Principality Building Society, which we released to media early this week, showed that Wales’ house prices have remained steady. The report from Q2 2020 (April-June) saw the average house price in Wales drop by only 0.7% since the beginning of the pandemic, but transactions were down by 66% on the same time last year. We secured over 20 pieces of coverage for Principality’s HPI including articles in the Western Mail, Daily Post, Wrexham Leader, Property Wire and Wales Business Insider
3) Keeping older people safely on their feet now that shielding restrictions have ended
A third of people over 65 fall every year, and with the inactivity in older people that lockdown and shielding may have caused, it is feared that falls could pose an increased threat to life. Our client Elderfit, a company specialising in exercise for older people, was established to combat the risk that falls pose to the older generation. When lockdown struck, they took all of their face to face classes in care homes and community centres online to help address the increasing risk to older people’s health.
To help promote Elderfit’s new online platforms, we produced a video (above) featuring Margaret Shanahan, 69 from Splott. Margaret started classes following a recommendation from her GP to help alleviate the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as well as severe knee pain. As a direct result of Elderfit classes Margaret has seen her health improve dramatically. ITV Wales covered Margaret’s and Elderfit’s story as well as News from Wales and Wales 247.
4) Unveiling a new dog spa in Carmarthenshire
Our client, Burns Pet Nutrition, has unveiled its very own doggy spa. The natural pet food company, which is based in Carmarthenshire, has opened up a dog grooming salon, ‘The Dog Spa’, at its popular Parc y Bocs Farm Shop facility in Kidwelly, which also includes a restaurant, café and outdoor play area.
Lucky dogs will be pampered with a full roster of canine services and treatments including traditional washing, grooming and styling, as well as nail trimming, ear cleaning and even facials and paw balms. You can read more about the opening here on Wales 247 and Pet Business World.
5) Teaming up with UK travel influencers to give future travel inspo across the Celtic Routes
This year’s summer holiday season has been a little unusual (to say the least!) but we’ve still been providing travel inspiration for future trips with our client Celtic Routes – a partnership of six Welsh and Irish coastal counties to deliver unique travel experiences. We’ve teamed up with travel blogger Wanderlust Chloe to spread the message even further, working together to create blog and social media posts to share with her audience. Read Chloe’s 12 must-visit places on the Celtic Routes and follow Wanderlust Chloe and Celtic Routes on social media for more travel inspiration across West Wales and East Ireland.
