The Week That Was #140… 5 peeks behind the week at Working Word
From tea parties to rugby secrets, to the 'top' company to work for in Wales, making tax interesting through animation and reaching new heights, it’s been another busy week at Working Word HQ. Here’s five peeks behind our week.
1. Celebrating Wales’ BEST tea parties
Another week and another lovely new client we’re chuffed to be working with. Contact the Elderly is the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people through face to face contact – through their amazing Tea Parties that are hosted by equally amazing volunteers. We’ve been sharing the news that the charity will be launching new tea party groups across Wales and is looking for volunteers and service users to get the groups started. You can read all about it here on the South Wales Argus’ website.
2. The secret to the Scarlets’ success
The Scarlets rugby region has enjoyed no small amount of success in recent seasons, but it’s not all about the oval shaped ball. Off the pitch Scarlets the business is doing mightily well too, which is why we arranged for Wales Business Insider’s editor, Douglas Friedli, to talk with the brains behind the business, namely Jon Daniels, director and general manager of rugby, and finance director Phil Morgan. Insider saw fit to give the Scarlets a double page spread where they told us that “two heads are better than one” and we also learned insider knowledge (pardon the pun) that paying for top talent is not the obvious road to success, culture is critical too. To read the article you can subscribe here. Pob lwc, good luck to the Scarlets who play the South African Southern Kings tonight at 6pm BST in Port Elizabeth.
3. Showcasing super staff rewards with Burns
Our client Burns Pet Nutrition is making a name for itself as one of the top companies to work for in the country. That’s down to an enviable staff rewards package that includes everything from a 10% annual pension contribution and a daily three-course lunch for just £1, to on-site kennels, performance-related bonuses and a company car for all employees after two years.
Each year, the firm invests around £1m back into its staff…and it’s paying off – the business has become so popular that prospective candidates are regularly trying their luck and posting CVs through staff letterboxes in a bid to secure a position! We put together a story on Burns’ impressive staff investment, securing coverage in local and trade titles, including Recruitment Buzz, the Llanelli Herald and Wales 247.
4. Social storytelling, talking Welsh tax and building a nation
From 6 April 2019, for the first time, money raised from income tax will stay in Wales.
To help spread the news about the new Welsh rates, we kickstarted a bilingual social media campaign with an animated video that followed the journey of your hard-earned pound as it funds vital public services across Wales, from our NHS, to collecting our recycling and improving public transport.
You can watch the video in Welsh here or join the conversation using the hashtags #MyTaxMyWales / #FyNhrethFyNghymru
5. The sky’s the limit as Everest exhibition goes ahead, despite doctors’ warnings
This week we shared the moving story of Nick Jones, who has embarked on a three-week trek to Everest thanks to sponsorship support from our client, local independent fostering agency, Five Rivers Child Care.
Nick and a group of friends will climb to raise funds for a new charity, Nick Jones Foundation for Bereaved Children, which was set up by Nick earlier this year after his terminal diagnosis from a rare form of heart failure. Nick has two children, aged 15 and 13, and set up the foundation as he believes not enough support is available for children who lose their parents.
Five Rivers has donated £1,000 towards the expedition and offered the Nick Jones Foundation use of its specialist clinicians to help the charity provide critical support services to bereaved children. Read the full story here.
In other news…Arrival of baby Alys Eta!
This week our very own Sarah Wise has given birth to a beautiful baby girl, called Alys Eta. We are so thrilled for her and are looking forward to Alys coming to visit us in the office soon!
