The Week That Was... 5 peeks behind the week at Working Word

From budget analysis to stargazing with celebrities via impressive national headlines and International Women’s day celebrations, here’s five peeks behind our working week.

1) Buy to Let Restructuring hits the Sunday nationals

If you’re a buy to let landlord, you’d do well to mark April 6th in your diary.  The day heralds a worrying new dawn for many landlords due to significant changes to the current system of mortgage interest tax relief for buy to let investors.  This could see profits being turned into losses for tens of thousands of these landlords across the UK.

The resulting fall-out in the buy to let sector has been significant, with thousands of landlords selling their investments, and the number of applications for new buy to let mortgages stagnating. However, despite this, awareness of the new changes in the sector still remains worryingly low.

To address this, we’ve been working with new client Buy to Let Restructuring, a specialist property finance firm that aims to reduce the burden on landlords, to raise awareness of the incoming changes and promote the services they provide. In the past few weeks we’ve not only secured several pieces in key property and financial trade titles, but following a feature pitch from us to the Sunday Express, secured the company profile in a large feature in the paper discussing the impact of the new changes. The story also featured online, generating hundreds of comments from those keen to engage in the buy to let taxation debate.

2) Stargazing with the stars

MWT.jpgThis week, not only did we manage to get Wales’ favourite weather woman, the lovely Sian Lloyd, to join us stargazing in Dwr Cymru’s Elan Valley Estate for our client Mid Wales Tourism, but we then went and bagged coverage in the UK’s most read Sunday newspaper, The Mail on Sunday about her stay.  This success saw over 3m readers pick up a copy of paper every weekend, as well as the millions who check out their online coverage.

On her stargazing journey, Sian learned that if you make the trip to the dark sky status site, you don’t even need binoculars to see a plethora of stars and incredible sites. But, if you’d like to go all about and can afford to spend a couple of hundred pounds, taking a look with a telescope will enable you to witness incredible worldly sights such as these taken by Nick Busby, chair of the Usk Astronomical Society and lifelong astro-photographer. 3) Putting business clients at the front of budget announcements 

Budget.jpgThe budget is one of the dates in the business calendar that every PR wants to get their clients’ voices at the heart of.  But with so many voices keen to be heard it can be difficult to cut across the noise.

Never ones to be phased by competition, with careful planning and using our strong media relationships, we secured key prediction comments ahead of the budget in the Western Mail for our clients KTS Owens Thomas and Newport-based chartered accountants, UHY Hacker Young. Following Phillip Hammond’s big pitch, we were quick off the mark to not only ensure post-budget coverage for our client Principality Building Society, reflecting on the announcements, but also assist UHY Hacker Young in hosting its annual Budget Breakfast event, which saw nearly 200 business guests from across South Wales attend to hear a detailed analysis of the  Budget and what it means for Welsh companies.

 And it didn’t stop there as we continued to capitalise on the opportunities after the budget was over by arranging for Carol Warburton, Director at KTS Owens Thomas, to feature on Radio Wales’ Wales@Work programme.  Carol gave her expert opinion on the key issues raised in the budget such as the delayed plans to make tax digital, the rise in personal allowance and the increase to the NIC rate. 4) Boosting Wales’ contact centre stars (with a little celeb support!)

Contact%20Centre%20awards.jpgComedian Jason Manford took to the stage at the Wales Millennium Centre last Friday to pay homage to the shining stars of the contact centre sector in Wales.

Around 700 guests attended the prestigious Welsh Contact Centre Awards which saw organisations and individuals recognised for driving excellence within Wales’ prosperous contact centre sector over the past twelve months.

The event, now in its 18th year, is organised by the Welsh Contact Centre Forum, the industry-led employers' forum that lends its expertise to more than 200 employers in Wales, delivering advice and practical support to firms of all sizes.

Armed with an embargoed press release and some killer shots from the ceremony, we secured coverage in a range of Welsh platforms and trade titles.

5) Making a stand on International Women’s Day 

IWD.jpgInternational Women’s Day (8th March) has dominated the media landscape at the same time every year, although this year it was also competing with the budget.

Much like the opportunities presented by the budget announcements, media across the UK were flooded with opinion pieces, new survey stories and comments from women hoping to have their voices heard.  We secured a first person feature with Business News Wales from Carol Warburton, Director at KTS Owens Thomas, sharing her insight into how Wales can work to improve boardroom diversity, which featured as the top story on the news website for the day.

Elsewhere, as part of our ongoing Anti-Bullying campaign with Welsh Government, we worked with blogger Katy Dodds from Little But Fierce, to tackle the issue being found beyond the school gates and within universities and in the workplace. Katy used her own personal experience to give thoughts and advice to young people who are affected by bullying, featuring on ProMo-Cymru’s website.

To whet your appetite, you take a look at the inspiring story of Jin, a fitness instructor whose love of sport actually saved her life when she was struck down with a rare disease. Keep your eyes peeled for the official campaign launch on Wednesday 22nd March!

And finally...

Okay, so we’ll admit that Wales perhaps hasn’t quite had the Six Nations tournament we had hoped for so far, but there are still two games left and there’s (almost) everything to play for.
